Annie Sherwood Hawks was born on May 28, 1836, in Hoosick, NY. She died on January 3, 1918 and is buried in Hoosick. Annie Hawks was a poet and hymnist who wrote a number of hymns with her pastor, Robert Lowry. She married Charles Hawks.
She met Robert Lowry while he was the pastor of the Hanson Place Baptist Church in Brooklyn, NY. They collaborated on a number of hymns which he published. She wrote the lyrics, and Lowry composed the music.
Some of Annie’s most popular works included: “I Need Thee Every Hour”; “Thine, Most Gracious Lord”; “Why Weepest Thou? Who Seekest Thou?”; “Full and Free Salvation” and “My Soul Is Anchored”. All together she wrote the lyrics to at least 64 published hymns.
