Joel Hemphill was born in Fresno, CA in 1939. When he was still young his parents moved their family to West Monroe, Louisiana, where his father pastored a church.
Joel married LaBreeska Rogers in 1957. They recorded their first record in 1966.
I vividly remember seeing the Hemphills in concert at our church when I was around 7 years old. At this time Tim McKeithen was a member of the group. I loved listening to their records that my mom played throughout my childhood.
Joel has thus far written in excess of 300 songs, many reaching number 1 on the charts. He, along with his family, have received 8 Dove Awards.
Joel was inducted into the Southern Gospel Music Association Hall Of Fame in 2007.
A few of his great songs:
- Consider The Lillies
- And He Did
- Pity the Man
- I Came on Business For The King
- I’m Not Perfect, Just Forgiven
- He’s Still Working On Me
